Masters of colour Derain to Kandinsky. Royal Academy of Arts, en Inglés, Arte, precioso barato
There are great and terrible things in the Royal Academy’s new exhibition, Masters of Colour: Derain to Kandinsky. This show of works from the Merzbacher collection is much more than a short stroll from André Derain to Vassily Kandinsky. It takes us instead from an early, 1866 Cézanne vanitas (last seen in the Cézanne retrospective at the Tate) to a 1950 Max Beckmann still life, via impressionists, postimpressionists, fauvists, constructivists and expressionists, Picasso, Braque and Matisse, Léger, Miro and Ernst.
